THE chairman of a women’s refuge in Stroud is urging the county council to do more for female victims of domestic violence.

Stroud Women’s Refuge claims that there are not enough specialist services in the county to meet the needs of women experiencing domestic violence.

The push is part of the nationwide campaign run by Women’s Aid in response to a national crisis of women’s refuges caused by budget cuts.

New research reveals a severe shortfall in the number of refuge spaces available – the South West currently has a 40 per cent shortfall of bed spaces.

Stroud Beresford Group funds the only two refuges left in the county, according to its chairman, Angela Lamond.

She said: “Gloucestershire County Council used to fund six refuges. We are sending an SOS to GCC to urge them to protect the remaining services here so we can play our part in the vital national network of domestic violence services.”

Cllr Kathy Williams, cabinet member for long-term care at GCC, said protecting victims of domestic abuse is a priority.

“In the past refuges have not been successful for all victims, particularly men or women with teenage sons,” she said. “Nowadays our services are focused much more on what people want and need.

“We know how important it is to keep routines and remain in touch with friends and family, so where it’s safe and appropriate we offer support that helps victims stay in their own homes.

“When this isn’t possible we provide options that meet the individual’s needs.”
