POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a seven-vehicle collision on the M5 yesterday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 2pm on the southbound carriageway close to Michaelwood services between junction 13 and 14.

Two HGVs and five cars, carrying 16 occupants in total, were involved in the collision. Of those, 14 were treated by the ambulance service at the scene for minor injuries.

A 23-year-old Coventry man who was driving one of the cars was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious head injuries. He is currently in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the same car was also taken to Southmead Hospital with pelvic injuries and remains in a serious condition.

Police want to speak to any witnesses who have not yet contacted them, including at least one person who was stood on the nearby footbridge and witnessed the entire incident.

The carriageway was closed until 9.20pm while a collision investigation was carried out, casualties treated and vehicles recovered.

Police remain at the scene but two lanes have now been opened.
