TWO people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a seven-vehicle crash on the M5 near Stroud yesterday afternoon.

A 23-year-old Coventry man who was driving the car pictured was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious head injuries and is currently in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the same car was also taken to Southmead Hospital with pelvic injuries and remains in a serious condition.

Police said the car was pushed into the HGV by another vehicle.

Two HGVs and five cars, carrying 16 occupants in total, were involved in the collision near Michaelwood services.

Of those, 14 were treated by the ambulance service at the scene for minor injuries.

Police want to speak to any witnesses who have not yet contacted them, including at least one person who was stood on the nearby footbridge and witnessed the entire incident.

The carriageway was closed until 9.20pm while a collision investigation was carried out, casualties treated and vehicles recovered.

Police remain at the scene but two lanes have now reopened.
