GB Para Table Tennis Team Pathway athlete Billy Shilton took gold in the men’s class eight singles in the inaugural Junior tournament held at the RITTO Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The Stonehoue teenager dropped only one set on the way to the final of the under 23 event and secured the gold medal with a 3-1 win over Marius Olczak from Poland.

He then topped his group in the open men’s class eight singles with three wins from three.

A 3-0 win against Yoshihisa Takeda took him into the quarter-finals and the 17-year-old was unlucky to come up against the former world champion Richard Csejtey in top form and the Slovakian world number nine used all his experience to win in four close sets.

“Overall I feel the competition was good and I came out with a lot of positives - both for my table tennis and mentally,” said Shilton.

“I was really pleased to win the junior event as it was my first time competing in a junior international competition.

“In the open singles and team event I took the top players really close but struggled to finish the matches off.

“Playing in the class nine team event was a challenging but enjoyable experience and I am looking forward to getting back into training and making as many improvements as I can.”
